From that point, your sleep, light exposure, meals, caffeine, and other body-clock influences are coordinated around the schedule your trip allows—not the schedule a textbook assumes.

Light is one of the strongest tools for shifting your body clock. Your brain uses light to decide whether it's time to be alert or time to sleep.

That's why travelers can feel exhausted in the middle of the day or wide awake at 2 a.m. after crossing time zones—their body is still operating on the wrong clock.

The timing of light exposure matters. Exposure at the right time can help move your body clock toward your destination schedule. Exposure at the wrong time can push it in the opposite direction and prolong jet lag. That's why managing light is one of the most important parts of a successful jet lag plan.

Your body pays attention to more than sleep and light. Meal timing is also one of the signals it uses to determine what time it is.

That's why travelers often feel hungry at odd hours after crossing multiple time zones. Their body may still be operating on home time, even though they've already arrived somewhere else.

Most airlines serve meals based on flight schedules. Your body clock doesn't. The timing, type, and size of meals can help support your adjustment to local time or work against it.

Melatonin is one of several tools that can help shift your body clock, but it's not automatically included in every StopJetLag Plan. The timing of melatonin matters, and taking it at the wrong time can work against your adjustment.

Your plan is built around your flights (including catching your connecting flight departures), destination, sleep opportunities, and personal preferences. If melatonin could help support your transition to the new time zone, we'll tell you when to take it. If it isn't appropriate or necessary, we won't include it.

Most travelers think caffeine helps them beat jet lag.

Sometimes it does.

Sometimes it does the exact opposite. Caffeine doesn't just affect how awake you feel. It can also influence the timing of your body clock. That's why the same cup of coffee that helps you stay alert during one part of a trip can make it harder for your body to adjust during another.

Anyone who has landed exhausted after a long flight knows the temptation. You're tired, foggy, and reaching for the nearest coffee. The problem is that feeling more awake isn't always the same as adapting to a new time zone.

For travelers who regularly consume caffeine, the timing of caffeine can be just as important as the amount. That's why StopJetLag provides specific caffeine recommendations based on your itinerary and adjustment strategy. Some of those recommendations may feel counterintuitive because they are designed to help shift your body clock, not simply fight fatigue.

If you don't normally consume caffeinated beverages, caffeine is usually unnecessary. The other timed influences in your StopJetLag Plan can provide the signals needed to help your body adapt.

How and why they work

Exposure to Bright Light

Bright light exposure can strongly influence your body clock.(1)(2) When scheduled for exposure, the light source should mimic outdoor daylight; the brighter the better. Follow the bright light exposure patterns for two days after arrival. When outside during 'Avoid Bright Light' periods, wear sunglasses.

Altering Sleep Patterns

The StopJetLag plan considers your flight complexities, relative to your sleep patterns, to help you avoid sleep deprivation by determining the best time to ensure 'core sleep' periods. Following the guidelines for rest and activity periods will make it easier to transition to the right sleep schedule at your new destination. Ear plugs and a sleep pillow can help you sleep or rest more comfortably.

Meals: What to eat, when

StopJetLag uses the naturally occurring fluctuations in your body's energy reserves by scientifically scheduling light meals and large meals to help you switch your sense of time to a new pattern. Here's why. High-protein meals signal your body's active phase. High-carbohydrate meals tell your body when it's time to wind down. That's why many recommendations include eating a larger, high protein breakfast on destination time to signal a pattern change.

Caffeine do's and don'ts

Caffeine can also affect your body clock re-synch. Ingesting caffeine results in a short period of stimulation followed by a drop in your glycogen (blood sugar) level. Proper timing and minimal use of caffeine in the days prior to a time zone shift is important. Caffeine is in many products and a chart is included in your StopJetLag Plan, as well as alternate instructions for non-caffeine drinkers.

Melatonin Supplements (Optional)

The effects of melatonin supplements as defense against jet lag have been well documented(3)(4) and our recommendations reflect the latest scientific research. Consult your physician before using melatonin supplements if you have an autoimmune condition, depressive disorder, are pregnant or nursing, or under 12 years of age. The recommended dose of melatonin is 3 to 5 mg. A sleep mask, which simulates darkness, is helpful in natural melatonin production.
